Master Tracks Pro Demo Ver. 3.96
THE SETUP INSTALLATION PROGRAM
Master Tracks Pro now has an improved installation program that runs
from Windows.
To install from Windows:
1. Insert the floppy disk in Drive A: or B:.
2. From the Program Manager File menu, choose "RUN".
3. A dialog box will appear. In the "Command Line" field enter...
A:SETUP or...
B:SETUP
4. The setup program on the floppy disk will run. Follow the on-
screen prompts to complete the installation.
To install from DOS:
1. Insert the floppy disk in Drive A: or B:.
2. From the DOS prompt type WIN A:SETUP or WIN B:SETUP.
3. The setup program on the floppy disk will run. Follow the on-
screen prompts to complete the installation.
To run the Master Tracks Pro Demo, double-click its icon, or one of
the sample music file icons, in the Windows Program Manager.
This version of Master Tracks Pro is designed to run with the
Multimedia Extensions to Windows or with Passport's own MIDI drivers.
If you have the Windows Multimedia Extensions you should not install
the Passport MIDI drivers, instead you can use any MIDI driver that
is installed with your Multimedia extensions. If you do NOT have
Multimedia Extensions to Windows you MUST install the Passport MIDI
drivers in order for Master Tracks Pro to run.
There are three cases where you might want to use Passport's MIDI
drivers even if you are running Multimedia Extensions. The first case
is if you have a MusicQuest MQX style MIDI interface, and you want to
use its extended 32 MIDI channel or SMPTE syncing capabilities. The
second case is if you want to use Passport's MIDI Transport
interface. The final case is if you experience inaccuracies during
recording when using an MPU-401 or LAPC style MIDI interface for
MIDI in. In any of these cases you can install the Passport MIDI
drivers into the same directory where Master Tracks Pro is installed.
Then, to use the Passport MIDI drivers instead of Multimedia
Extensions, simply run Windows from inside the Master Tracks Pro
directory. Be aware that when you do this, the rest of the Multimedia
Extensions will not function. To restore full multimedia capabilities
you must exit Windows and re-run Windows from any other directory
that does not contain the Passport MIDI drivers.
The Setup program creates a Program Manager group called "Master
Tracks Pro" and several Program Manager items (icons) for the Master
Tracks Pro program and sample files. Unfortunately, a limitation of
the Setup program is that it has no way of knowing if a group already
exists, so if you already have a group called "Master Tracks Pro", or
if you re-install one or more of the program sections, the old
"Master Tracks Pro" group and any additional items in it will be
replaced with the new "Master Tracks Pro" group with only those items
that are associated with the sections that were installed. For this
reason you should rename the Program Manager group or move all the
items to a different group before re-installing all or part of Master
Tracks Pro.
Several sample music files are included with Master Tracks Pro.
The files DRIVING.MTS and GtrBlues.MTS are authored and voiced
according to authoring guidelines for Multimedia PCs, where channels
1 through 10 are for Hi-End General MIDI style sound modules, while
channels 13 through 16 are for base-level Adlib, SoundBlaster or
MediaVision style FM synth cards. The best way to get these files to
sound good on your system is to play them back through a correctly
configured MIDI Mapper. You can do this by selecting the MIDI Mapper
as the output port in Master Tracks Pro's MIDI Setup dialog.
Alternativly, you can playback the base-level channels directly to an
Adlib sytle FM synth, by selecting the corresponding output port in
the MIDI Setup dialog and by soloing the tracks that are assigned to
channels 13 through 16. MIDI Mapper and Adlib style FM support is
only available when running with the Multimedia Extensions. Of course,
if you have a General MIDI synth, such as the Roland SC-55 Sound
Canvas connected to a MIDI out port, then you could solo all tracks
that are assigned to channels 1 through 10 and play them back
directly.
The other sample music files that are included are either voiced
for a Roland MT-32, CM-64 or LAPC style synth or are generic enough
to sound good on just about any synth or sound module. These files
are not intended for multimedia purposes and will not sound right
when played back through the MIDI Mapper.
THE MIDI SETUP DIALOG
The MIDI Setup dialog has been redesigned in this version of Master
Tracks Pro. The main difference is that the process of port selection
is greatly simplified. The MIDI in and MIDI out ports are selected
using drop-down lists (combo boxes) instead of radio buttons. If you
are running the Multimedia Extensions for Windows, all the MIDI ports
that are available on your system will appear in the list boxes along
with a "None" choice. The combo box lists for Port A/B should also
have an option for the MIDI Mapper. See your Multimedia Extensions
or MPC documentation for details on using the MIDI Mapper. If you are
using the Passport MIDI Driver, you will see the normal MPU-401,
Transport on COM1:, and Transport on COM2:, choices that are
supported by the Passport MIDI Driver. To make a port selection,
click on the arrow button on the right of the combo box and a list of
all available selections will appear. Click on the selection that
you want. The "None" choice is useful for freeing up a port so that
it can be used by another application.
The other main difference in the MIDI Setup dialog is that the
"Port Base Address" and the "Interrupt IRQ" settings have been
removed. If you are running Multimedia Extensions, these items
can be adjusted by using the Driver Setup Applet in the Windows
Control Panel. Otherwise, you will have to make manual entries
in the SYSTEM.INI file as described below
In general, the entries in the SYSTEM.INI use the following format:
[DRVRNAME.DRV] The actual name of the driver.
INT=n Interrupt IRQ setting where n = 2 - 15
PORT=n Port Base address where n is a port address in
hexadecimal notation.
Some of the Multimedia Drivers use "IRQ=" in lieu of "INT=", so it
never hurts to include both entries. Each entry should be on a
different line, followed by the same interrupt/IRQ setting. Note:
These entries may not appear if the drivers were previously using
their default settings. You may have to enter the driver name in
square brackets, followed by your desired settings, one item per
line. See the example below.
[MPU401.DRV]
INT=2
PORT=330
[TRNSPRT1.DRV]
INT=4
PORT=38F
[TRNSPRT2.DRV]
INT=3
PORT=28F
PLEASE NOTE:
When using the Passport MIDI drivers with an MPU-401 interface, the
default interrupt settings of 2 or 9 do not work when running in 386
Enhanced Mode. You can either reconfigure the interrupt setting on the
card and in SYSTEM.INI or you can run in Standard Mode (i.e., WIN /S).
This limitation does not occur when running Multimedia Extensions. In
all cases the interrupt and port address settings on your MIDI
hardware must match the settings in the SYSTEM.INI file, in order for
MIDI to function correctly.
